School closures due to snow

March 22, 2013

May schools are closed in the UK today due to snow. As I’m a teacher in one of them, I’m absolutely delighted to get a free day to work at home but others are not so pleased.

What can we do to mitigate the inconvenience caused? One suggestion has been to send teachers to a local school. After all, one of the main reasons schools close is that teachers are unable to get there, and that’s not really their fault.

There’s a problem with that idea though. To put it bluntly: in some secondary schools, if you suddenly replaced all the teachers with a load of different teachers, a minority of kids would take advantage and run riot, and it would be very difficult for teachers who are unknown to these pupils to control the situation. Because, yes, believe it or not, the only reason some students behave is due to the relationships teachers forge with them over years.

Could we meet half-way? For example, could I, as a secondary school maths teacher, go to a local school with my CRB certificate and some ID, and supervise a few kids? Perhaps offer a bit of maths tuition? Could this be publicised on twitter/facebook, with parents “claiming” a place, then sending or bringing their child, to be collected at an (approximately) agreed time?

Maybe there would be a limit of, say, ten pupils per teacher. Some parents/carers may be quite happy to keep their children at home so full capacity may not be required.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
